The Youth Sailing Program for 2024!

This program will be offered this summer but we need volunteers (no experience necessary) to ensure safety and learning for our youth sailors.  Please donate some of your time to this wonderful program.

The Colington Yacht Club (“CYC”) is sponsoring a youth sailing camp from July 22 – 26 run by Hatteras Community Sailing (“HCS”).  The camp will take place in Colington Harbour.  HCS is a 501c3 non-profit run by Jay and Meg Phillips located in Buxton.  They are both US Sailing Certified sailing instructors and have years of sailing experience from Blue Ocean racing, teaching all levels of sailing, sail making, sailboat design and building.

CYC and HCS will supply all sailboats.  The program will offer both Optimist and 420 sailboats.  The program will run for 5 days from 9 am to 3pm including snacks for sailors at the break:

Optimist: up to 8 sailors ages 8-12; 9am-3pm M-F

420: up to 8 sailors ages 13-18; 9am-3pm M-F

There will be 2 Coaching RIBs, 2 Certified Head Coaches, a minimum of 1 Jr Coaches per class, and an online registration website for the event.

The picture below is from Aug 21, 2023  the first day of camp this year.

The program will teach sailors boat rigging, basic sailing skills, and basic racing strategies for those interested in racing.  The youth will spend most of their time on the water in Colington Harbour, sailing with instruction from Jay and Meg.  The course is tailored to each students experience and goals.  Parents are welcome to come and participate as volunteers.  There is no requirement to have prior sailing experience.

CYC has run youth sailing programs in the past and we are dedicated to pursuing youth sailing this summer and future summers.
